WHO SAID YOU CAN’T HAVE A VICTORIAN CONSERVATORY ON A BUNGALOW
An interesting observation and excellent guide is that the vast majority of architects and professional building companies when considering such a design would only consider a new tiled gable extending forward from the existing roof.
There are many other ways that the limited height can be overcome, including rear boundary gutter, a vertical triangle at the rear ‘or constructing the conservatory side on’.
In practice, three main considerations for a prospective customer would be:-
- A structurally secure design
- Good long term weather proofing
- Aesthetically pleasing overall appearance
With a tiled gable there is a much more spacious area within the conservatory. This would not be achieved with a rear roof section sloping down towards the boundary gutter.
Any rear boundary gutter is difficult to construct and many double glazing companies do not carry out this professionally. To ensure its long term stability efficient weatherproofing and not least of all so that it will support the weight of the conservatory roof much expertise must be brought into play.
Concerns that constructing a tiled gable would mean a major disturbance of an existing roof are totally unfounded. It is in fact a very straightforward and minor building operation. Very simply, the work involved is removing existing tiles in a triangular area, constructing an appropriate timber framework, which is then battened, felted and tiled partly with tiles that have been removed. It is however an operation which must be carried out by a specialist company which is fully qualified and experienced.
The difference in cost between alternatives is extremely favourable towards a new tiled gable. Firstly, it will enable you to have a conventional Victorian or Edwardian conservatory design, avoid the costs involved in manufacture and construction of a special rear hip and boundary gutter, together with all its flashing and additional support. The good news is that without going to considerable extra expense, you can achieve an infinitely more desirable and structurally secure finished product.
In conclusion, experience shows that anyone viewing a completed tiled gable option by comparison with alternatives, will generally choose wholeheartedly the option shown in the picture below.
